Though long term under natural conditions, it’s difficult to imagine men’s existence in the penumbra without genetic mutation as witnessed in deep ocean creatures. Even harder it is to image how the ecosystem could remain as it is if plants seized the process of photosynthesis.
More realistic scenarios such as uncontrollable urban and population growth, therefore increased demand in the food chain, and
the pushing of agricultural areas further away from densely inhabited centers have led researchers to develop projects such as LED enabled City Farms. Light can set out hierarchy and structure to the urban grid, enhance, provide security, but also disguise. Excessive lighting can have the opposite effect. It can become a distraction or a visual pollutant. In Arts and Entertainment the quality of light can define the visual language of a piece. It can also manipulate the spectator’s mood. It can excite, calm, increase concentration or distract. It can be used as an adorning object or a character on its own.
The on going visual research shape-shifts in the form of a documentary film under one hour. Taking the spectator through global cities and landscapes, as well as presenting input from professionals of different fields; artists, designers and technologists, in order to unveil the meaning and relevance of light to their body of work, as well as that to the urban context of the City.
So far the project has accumulated more than 8 hours of interview material with professionals as well as additional footage shot in California, England and Brazil.
